To figure out your face shape, you will first need to measure your face. Use a tape measure. Here are the measurements you need.
First, measure across the forehead at the widest area. Write down the measurement.
Secondly, measure the jaw area from one side to the other, at the widest area. Write down the measurement.
Third, measure across the cheekbones. Write down the measurement.
Fourth, measure from the top of the forehead, where the hairline is, to the tip of the chin.
These measurements will help you know which face shape you have.
Before we begin, I want to note that in the salon or hairdressing environment, a stylist should be able to distinguish the different face shapes. The stylist should examine your face before the salon shears are ever used.
The oval face will have a length of face that is equal to one and one half times the width. The cheekbones are slightly prominent. The forehead is slightly wider than the chin. The face will have a gradual tapering to the chin and the forehead may have a gently rounded hairline.
The long face is longer than it is wide. The forehead, cheekbones, and jaw line have similar measurements. The face has a long appearance. Sometimes, there will be a noticeable prominent chin. The long face generally has a high forehead.
The round face is usually about as wide as it is long. The cheek area is usually the widest. It is full looking, with a round chin.
The heart face generally has a narrow jawline, with more width at the cheekbones and forehead. The chin may taper to a gentle point and is narrower than the oval face shape.
The square face is about as wide as it is long. The forehead, cheekbones, and chin are all about the same in width. The strong square jawline is the most noticeable feature, usually coming to a point.
