It's been months since the opening of the great manbag debate of 2011 and the question is nowhere near being resolved. Is the manbag the innovation of the decade, allowing men equality in the conveyance of small but heavy objects, or a wussy throwback to student days? Next in the to wear or not to wear series: the controversial man bag.
The manbag is a bag, usually crossed over the shoulder a bit like a woman's handbag in which the male can carry all the modern paraphernalia we just can't do without these days. Slammed by chiropractic organisations for damaging your back, and criticised for its femininity and lack of style, the manbag has received something of a mixed press. However, are there some success stories as well as the cutthroat reaction?
There's nothing inherently unfashionable about manbags, explains Dominik Chapman, a fashion design student from London, featured in an earlier in an interview we held recently. It just depends on how you wear them. "Wear them either at the end of your arm or thrown over your shoulder and held in place with your hand."
Indeed. It's also important to choose the right style and size of bag depending on your circumstances. If you are more of a businessman, think about going for a briefcase style manbag that can be adapted according to the situation. Your back is the strongest part of you and is most suited to carrying heavy objects so it makes sense to carry your bag over your shoulder than in your hand. If you are looking for a bag to take away for a weekend, have a think about a holdall that can be worn over your shoulder and if you normally carry lots of files, think about a cross-body satchel, which is on trend for both men and women at the moment. Make sure to choose something hard wearing and sturdy - leather is a good choice and tends to look even better with age.
Yes, manbags might just be too cool for some. BUT they are also extremely practical. Give me a man sensibly carrying all the modern paraphernalia we are obliged to schlep around in a man bag over a man with his pockets sagging down to his knees with the weight of his wallet, phone and keys any day. Plus, a bit of leather adds a touch of class to a boring work suit - keep it understated and classic and you can't go wrong!
Verdict: Man bags are definitely not going away any time soon, so why not jump on the bandwagon and join an admittedly quite practical fashion.
