Understanding Breast Augmentation Surgery

The medical world is a fascinating one, and in terms of cosmetic surgery in particular, one that has come along in leaps and bounds over the past few decades. One of the most commonly-sought procedures in Australia is breast augmentation, and it is one that can yield noticeable and greatly successful results. If you have been considering breast augmentation or are in interested in what is involved, this article will provide you with the basic information you need to understand a bit about the process, what is involved and what to expect.

Consultation Process

In the cosmetic procedure world, the consultation process is taken just as seriously as the surgery itself. Because you will be having an elective surgery, your doctor should explain thoroughly all of your options and the decisions that need to be made. It is important to consult with as many professionals as you feel you need to in order to be comfortable n secure in your decision--after all you are entrusting two of your most valuable assets to this person! Once you've settled on which doctor or practice you'd like to have the surgery done with, you can start to consult as to size and shape. while you may have an idea in mind, stay open to the suggestions of the professionals. After all, they have done this before and most likely will have some informative opinions on what look would suit your body-type and frame.

Australia Compared to The Rest of The World

In Australia, breast enlargement is very common, and in relation to the rest of the world we have an extremely low incidence of implant-related problems or issues. Even with so many surgeries being performed each day, the success rate and patient-satisfaction levels are at an all time high. Our surgeons are professional, well-trained and eager to listen to any questions or queries you may have, so you can rest assured that you will find someone who you feel completely confident with.

The Procedure Itself

The actual process of breast enlargement is complex, in order to make sure you get the desired lift, shape and size. The incision is customised to the implant and located underneath the breast, meaning scarring is almost invisible. The implant is inserted underneath the muscle in order to give you the most natural-looking results.

There are many reasons for a person to consider breast enlargement surgery, all of which are valid and meaningful to the person. The important decisions to make when deciding if surgery is for you are personal and based on individual consultation with professionals. If and when you do decide to have the procedure done, it should be with a doctor you trust, and have had intensive discussions with. Get all of your questions answered, and do not be afraid to discuss issues or worries you have.

What Are the Risks of Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Breast augmentation surgery is today so popular and commonly heard about. We hear many success stories but regrettably, some horror stories of 'breast enlargements gone wrong'. Thankfully, the risks of surgery going wrong are minimal if surgery is carried out by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. However, when breast augmentation surgery is considered, it is incredibly important for the individual to be aware of the associated risks.

From the outset, it should be stated that every surgical procedure brings with it a level of risk; there is always the potential for things to go wrong. Patients are sometimes dissatisfied with the results achieved and surgeons cannot always guarantee what the result will be. However, advancements in breast augmentation surgery and procedures have led to significant reduction in its risks.

There are a number of risks that a surgeon simply cannot predict prior to surgery. These include:

Descent: The tissue of some patients is not suitable or able to hold the implants in position and they consequently slide down the wall of the chest. Commonly, the scar then progresses up the breast and causes it to appear bottom heavy. Unfortunately, not even the wearing of supportive bras can rectify this situation; a breast lift is often necessary in this instance.

Detectability: Sometimes it is possible to see the edge of the implant and it may appear crinkled. This situation is made all the more obvious when considerable weight loss occurs.

Stretch marks: People who have existing stretch marks on their body are more susceptible to having stretch marks on their breasts.

Nipple and areola changes: Following breast enlargement, the nipples and areolars may alter in size, shape and colour. Also, minor breast asymmetry in the nipple and areola position can be exacerbated as a result of breast augmentation.

Asymmetry: Following breast augmentation, pre-existing asymmetry of the chest wall and breasts may become more obvious.

Scars: Prior to surgery, a plastic surgeon can only offer their best guess as to the location of the scar that will result. In few patients, thickening, puckering, hyperpigmentation and keloid formation may occur at the scar site.

Inflammation and infection: While there is a small chance of inflammation and/or infection, it occurs very rarely following breast enlargement surgery.

Silicone implants: The development and use of cohesive gel has made silicone implants all the more effective, safe and reliable. Although it is incredibly rare, it is possible for silicone implants to rupture and leak through breast tissue.

Damage to nerves: Quite a few women report localised numbness and a sharp pulling sensation following breast augmentation surgery and some even report complete numbness of the nipple. It is expected that each breast will feel slightly different and experience shows that most numbness and abnormality of sensation settles with time.

Tight sensation: A tight feeling is quite commonly experienced following breast enlargement surgery. For most people, the tight feeling eases as the breast tissue relaxes to fit and comfortably accommodate the implants.

Swelling: Uneven swelling in the breasts is common and some people find that one breast settles far more quickly than the other. Many patients find it reassuring to know that the swelling generally subsides within two weeks.

Recovery time: It is expected that each breast will take a different amount of time to heal; this is because the nerve supply is different and there are biological variations in each breast. The breasts will naturally feel different and every person has their own, individual response.

Reassuringly, the risks of breast augmentation surgery are far less today than what they were in the past. Many people enjoy excellent results and are very happy with the outcome. It is very important that people contemplating a breast enlargement are fully informed of the risks and have these clearly explained by their surgeon.

What To Expect When Recovering From Breast Augmentation Surgery

Breast augmentation is surgery. Many people don't realize how serious this--or any other--surgery is. Both physicians and patients sometimes ignore the possible side effects and risks in their anticipation to achieve a new look. Fortunately, complications are extremely rare. Yet you should be aware of what to expect during your recovery period. Keep these things in mind both before and after your surgery:

Healthy Women are Less Likely to Experience Problems

If you're in good overall health before surgery, you should recover the quickly and with only minor pain. However, if you have a history of bleeding or clotting disorders, high blood pressure or diabetes, any other chronic condition, you may experience more problems, including delayed wound healing. Too many people forget that good health brings even more good health; poor health increases your risk for more poor health.

Follow Your Surgeon's Instructions

Every surgeon provides detailed post-operative recovery instructions, follow those instructions which are customized just for you. Your doctor will tell you what activities to avoid and how long to avoid them. He or she will explain how to change the dressing and how to clean the incisions.

Check for Swelling, Redness and Signs of Infection

Make notes about any new or increased inflammation, increases in redness, or swelling around the incision. Be cautious for these signs of possible infection. Antibiotics are sometimes required after breast augmentation. Be sure that the edges of your wounds remain together and report any separation of the wound edges to your doctor.

Rest & Relax

If you want to recover from your breast augmentation recovery as quickly as possible, rest! Too many people go back to work too quickly or engage in restricted activities immediately. Your body has undergone a massive change and needs recovery time. Arrange for a friend or family member to help you with everyday tasks like cooking and cleaning. An initial period of moderate rest early in your post-operative recovery period will speed your healing and greatly reduce pain.

Take a Long View

Take care of the incisions. Remember that some people are genetically predisposed to form more scar tissue than others. But if you take proper care of yourself and your incisions, your post-op lines should fade dramatically. Within six months, you should be able to see only small white lines to remind you of the origin of new beautiful body. Breast augmentation is about your long-term happiness and it takes time to enjoy the full effects of your surgery.

You May Need Pain Pills for a While

Post-operative pain may need to be managed with prescription painkillers. Your physician will be able to provide a prescription if heat or cold packs fail to give enough relief. You will typically only need to take the pain killers between 3 - 7 days.

If you have end up having concerns about how you are feeling, healing and/or the appearance of your breasts, your post-operative visits with your surgeon are the best forum to discuss and address all of these concerns.

Winter Time Breast Augmentation

January and February are cold and dark. You have shopped for your new bathing suit and are dreaming of the summer sun. Get in shape for your beach vacation with breast augmentation surgery.

Getting the surgery during the winter months can prove a positive decision. You are able to take more time to recover, relax in the warmth of your home and have plenty of time to get ready for bathing suit season.

The winter is always a good time to take off of work. You have gotten over the post-holiday slump and will need a final pick-me-up before the summer months. When you schedule a breast augmentation surgery, be prepared to take anywhere from a few to several days off of work. Your body will need time to rest and recover from the surgery.

If its cold and damp outside, you won't feel at all guilty about lying on the couch or in bed reading as you recover. The dark days will encourage you to sleep and relax. When you get the surgery, your doctor will help you understand the kind of resting required to heal properly. For example, you will not be able to lift heavy objects. Caring for children can be difficult so you will need to arrange for help if you have a baby or small toddler that needs to be held.

Right after your surgery your breasts and chest will likely be swollen. This is just a sign that the body is trying to recover from the surgery. Your new breasts are adjusting to the added fluid and material. Your body is fighting and working to recognize your new implants and this can be a painful time. Your breasts will be tender to the touch and you won't want to put any pressure on the implant or the sutures.

Once you are off of bed rest and back to the office, you can imagine that wintertime would be easier for your post breast augmentation surgery wardrobe. You won't want to wear anything too tight. This could rub the sutures or put unwanted pressure on the breasts. Wintertime will prove handy because you can pull out your baggy sweaters and jackets. Your doctor may tell you to be very careful with bras. In fact when possible, you should opt for a camisole instead.

After a few weeks, your body will be almost fully adjusted to the new breasts and you will be able to start thinking about scheduling your next vacation. This one won't be spent lying on the couch recovering from breast augmentation surgery. You will be able to plan your trip to a warm climate for some fun in the sun and sand. If you bought a bathing suit prior to getting the enhancement, you may need to trade in the top for a larger size. Have fun!
